The "Old Lady Comforts" Reading Group

[PICA, TBA: 2020 and Fringe Arts in connection with artist Jaamil Olawale Kosoko’s project American Chameleon: The Living Installments.]

The "Old Lady Comforts" Reading Group is a socially engaged workshop project centered around Jaamil Olawale Kosovo's Syllabus for Peace. The slide images below were created by mining the questions posed in Alice Walker's essay, In Search of Our Mothers' Gardens, and by talking with my mother about my grandmother and great-grandmother. The questions in Walker's essay were a foundation for conversation in the workshop. "Old Lady Comforts" is how my mother described my Great-Grandma Ella's shoes.

Reading: In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens, Alice Walker, (1972), excerpted from: Within the Circle: An Anthology of African American Literary Criticism from the Harlem Renaissance to the Present, Angelyn Mitchell, ed. Durham and London: Duke University Press, 1994.
